We see here Jesus looking at His mother and saying "Woman, my time has not yet come". Many people read this and perhaps have no idea what's happening. Mary raised Jesus, and she watched him intently as he grew up. She knew from the time he was born that he was special. She was waiting for the day when he would show himself to be the Messiah. Can you picture it......"Jesus, show them what you can do"..."Jesus show them all"..."Jesus, now you can demonstrate just who you are!" Jesus must have heard it all his life. And every time he would respond, its not yet time...as he does here. The time would come for him to reveal His plan to others, but that would not be until the cross. The demonstration of self-sacrificial love on the cross was what Jesus had come for. Turning water into wine...merely a sign of what was to come.
So much is happening here, but his first miracle shows us what is to come. So many people talk about the "wine" miracle as if a license to drink was the only purpose for this passage. It serves something deeper. Jesus took common ordinary water...water that was being used for ceremonial purposes...the water of legalism and dead religion...and he changed it. Now, it doesn't matter if he changed it into wine, or milk, or orange juice, or coca cola. The fact remains, that in the hands of the Master, things change. He can change our lives as easily as he changed water into wine.
Do you want a fresh start in life? Has the past caught up to you? Is your present walk with Jesus gone cold and empty. Well, I want you to know that it can change. Open your heart up to Him and do what he says. That was what Mary told the servants....do what he tells you to do. Listen to him and there will be a change. Jesus will save the day...but he does it by showing his power to change. Perhaps you sense that deep down you need to change. Your heart, your character, your past. Come to Jesus and let him change you. Through his blood is freedom from shame and guilt, forgiveness and love, peace and mercy. There is a new heart and a new life waiting for you. Just come to Jesus and let him change what's on the inside. You won't regret it.
Lord Jesus, change me. I've got some rough spots, I've messed up. I need a new start, and I come before you and ask that you would come inside, and change my heart. Forgive my sins and my mistakes, and give me the gift of your eternal presence. Fill my life with Your life...and make me new again. In Jesus Name I pray....Amen
